INFOTECH STUDY: ARE WIRELESS SERVICE PROVIDERS MISSING THE MARK?
June 20, 2001 - Wirelesss Applications
PARSIPPANY, NJ, JUNE 20, 2001 - Amid the growing pains of a new industry and considerable hype about m-business, enterprises are just beginning to investigate seriously the potential for wireless applications. A new study by InfoTech, a New Jersey-based global consulting firm, surveyed enterprise decision makers on their plans and needs regarding wireless applications, and found that most respondents expect to decide this year how to get started with wireless, with initial deployment slated for 2002. Wireless expenditures, as a percentage of an overall IT budget, remain small, but are expected to jump from 3.7% in 2000 to 7.7% next year, according to InfoTech's new study, Wireless Applications: Strategies for Capturing the Business Market.
However, the comprehensive set of wireless functionality being touted by most service providers considerably overreaches most customers' more basic wireless needs. "We see a disconnect in the market, with suppliers continuing to overreach and elaborate upon the same large vision, and enterprises wanting to learn from a small introductory experience," said Shelly Tyler Radler, Senior Analyst at InfoTech.
The study team interviewed 15 of the leading wireless solutions providers including Broadbeam, GoAmerica (NASDAQ: GOAM), Sprint PCS (NYSE: PCS), and Cingular Interactive, a joint venture between BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) and SBC Communications (NYSE: SBC), to obtain their perspectives on the market opportunity. "With Carriers, WISPs, WASPs, Platform Developers, Systems Vendors and Independent Software Vendors morphing their business models at the same time that enterprise interest is awakening, 2001 is a pivotal year for suppliers to gain mindshare," commented Tyler Radler.
This study will be highlighted at an author-led workshop during InfoTech's Wireless Data for Business Conference (www.pbimedia-infotech.com/wdbexpo.htm) on September 19 in New York City.
