InfoTech Projects U.S. Enterprise Wireless Market to Hit $548 Million by 2006 Driven by Growth of Voice over WLAN and "Licensed Macro" Segments
PARSIPPANY, NJ, May 7, 2002 – U.S. Enterprise Wireless revenues are expected to soar from $138 million in 2001 to $548 million in 2006, according to the newest InfoTrack for Wireless Business report from InfoTech, a world leader in providing information and strategic consulting to the communications industry.
According to the study, market growth will be driven by the Voice over WLAN and Licensed Macro segments, which will represent 94 percent of new Enterprise users in 2006 -- up 68 percent from 2001.
Voice over WLAN products piggyback on wireless LAN access points to enable companies to have a single wireless infrastructure for both voice and data. According to Shelly Radler, senior wireless analyst at InfoTech, "Although Voice over WLAN sales were relatively flat in 2001, we see this segment showing substantial growth over the next five years. Coincident with this growth, look for new vendors to enter the market introducing other form factors with embedded Voice over WLAN capability. We see the next two years bringing significant product improvements in terms of system capacities and features, with many Quality of Service (QoS) enhancements being driven by the impending ratification of 802.11e."
The addressable market for Voice over WLAN products will also be expanding. "Although the vendors are currently targeting the retail, education and healthcare verticals, we see strong interest developing for these products across the broader industry segments," said Radler.
In 2001, the Licensed Macro segment – those products enabling employees to receive PBX/Key system functionality on their cell phones - displayed significant growth both in the number of new products introduced and in the number of new users. Increasing penetration of cellular/PCS/ESMR wireless services is also driving the demand for these products, as Licensed Macro products are especially attractive to companies that have highly mobile employees.
