InfoTech Study Shows Shift in IP Telephony Purchasing Decision Makers for the Mid-Market

Parsippany, NJ Oct. 6, 2005 (Business Wire) A new primary research study from InfoTech shows a recent shift in those making purchasing decisions for IP Telephony (IPT) among businesses in the Mid-Market (100-999 employees).

Among the Mid-Market companies that will implement IP Telephony by the end of next year, 45% said that the primary decision-maker was a Convergence Team consisting of both voice and data network managers, with 25% of decisions made by a CIO.

When the Convergence team was the primary IPT decision-maker, three-fourths chose their PBX vendor (e.g. Avaya or Nortel) as their preferred IPT vendor, though when CIOs made the decisions, two-thirds selected their data network equipment vendor (e.g. Cisco or 3Com) to supply the IP Telephony systems.

Of the Mid-Market companies that had not yet picked a preferred IPT vendor, more than half said that a Convergence Team would make the decision, possibly a positive indicator for PBX vendors.

“The Mid-Market for IPT represents an excellent growth opportunity with shipments increasing at an average annual rate of 23% over the next five years, compared to 18% for the rest of the IPT market,” according to Terry White, InfoTech VP/ICC Program Director and study author. “By the end of 2005, IP Telephony will account for 18% of the phones on business phone systems and services in the U.S. Mid-Market. By 2009, IPT penetration in the Mid-Market is projected to reach 56%, well above the 48% level for the total U.S. market.”

The InfoTrack for Converged Communications (ICC) Mid Market Analysis and Forecast provides a detailed market snapshot and forecast for IPT penetration and related services and applications and is part of InfoTech's ICC program, publishing four comprehensive primary research studies in 2005. Three of the studies will focus on the decision process for IPT vendor and service selection for three distinct market segments -- large enterprise, mid-market companies and small businesses. The fourth report covers market demand for converged applications and associated business processes.
