InfoTech Study Shows EMEA Region Leads Global
Converged
IP-PBX Shipments
U.S. Leads in IP Phone Penetration
PARSIPPANY,
NJ, October 30, 2003 – According
to a new study from research and consulting firm InfoTech, the EMEA
(Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region leads the world in shipments
of converged IP-PBX systems. InfoTech defines the converged systems
category of IP-PBX systems as business communication platforms that
support both traditional TDM and IP switching. In the second quarter
of 2003, 67% of total global lines shipped for converged systems
were to the EMEA region.
“
Traditional PBX manufacturers are rapidly shifting their product
lines to converged systems. Some, such as Siemens and Alcatel, are
no longer offering traditional PBXs in most markets. As a result,
customers with traditional requirements must purchase converged platforms
and then deploy them in TDM configurations. The market leadership
positions that Siemens and Alcatel enjoy in EMEA are clearly driving
these elevated converged system shipments”, said Frank Stinson,
program director at InfoTech.
The study
also found that the penetration rate of IP phones is much higher
in the U.S. market than the rest of the world. On a global basis,
only 36% of IP-PBX
customers deploy IP phones for more than 5% of their total terminals. In the
U.S., that number climbs to 54%. “The U.S. lead in the deployment of IP
Telephony to the desktop is a manufacturer-driven trend”, adds Stinson. “Competitors
emphasizing the IP phone as a critical element in quickly gaining the benefits
of IP Telephony, such as Cisco, have focused on the U.S. market initially. Traditional
PBX market leaders, such as Avaya and Nortel, have responded by stressing their
own IP station capabilities to maintain their customer base.”
InfoTech’s detailed research report, entitled InfoTrack
for Global Enterprise Communications Markets, provides a comprehensive quarterly view of global and
regional shipment activity of the three categories of IP-PBX systems (Telephony-Enabled
LAN, IP-Enabled PBX, Converged Systems), as well as traditional PBX and Key/Hybrid
systems. This report complements InfoTech’s InfoTrack for Enterprise
Communications program, which has been a leading provider of quarterly vendor shipments, market
shares, installed base, and forecasts on the North American market since 1990.
