INFOTECH PROJECTS 80% OF U.S. ENTERPRISES
TO DEPLOY WIRELESS LANs BY 2008
VOICE APPLICATIONS CRITICAL TO OVERCOMING ADOPTION

New research from InfoTech, a leading global research and consulting
firm, identifies the key factors that will allow Wireless LAN penetration
in U.S. enterprises to reach 80% by 2008 – representing a
five-year $5.9B market opportunity.
“Although
WLAN technologies are currently deployed in nearly half of all U.S.
businesses, 75% have limited deployment of wireless infrastructure
and devices to a tenth of their total workforce”, according
to Scott Drobner, wireless program director at InfoTech. “This
narrow adoption will persist until much-anticipated applications,
such as Voice over WLAN, have been deployed by market-leading enterprises
with a strong return on investment.”
“During
this same period of time, in-building mobile business users employing
multiple wireless technologies will rise from 14.8M to 30.8M --
40% of the mobile workforce by 2008. Despite this segment’s
strong use of cellular telephony and wireless data applications,
mobile service providers have been slow to provide adequate in-building
coverage for wireless services. Over half of surveyed businesses
voiced strong dissatisfaction with current in-building coverage,“
adds Drobner. ”The traditional mobile boundaries will continue
to blur as wireless business users no longer perceive in-building
and out-of-building as separate domains -- putting further pressure
on providers to achieve ubiquitous coverage.”
These and many
other research findings are presented in InfoTech’s Customer
Mobility Market Monitor – a robust bi-annual report that
provides detailed analysis of supply- and demand-side issues fundamental
to enterprise mobility. Drawing heavily from one-on-one interviews
with IT and Telecom decision-makers, the Customer Mobility Market
Monitor identifies major customer segments, quantifies current
and projected adoption of wireless applications, pinpoints purchase
preferences, and sizes revenue opportunities. This research is part
of InfoTech’s InfoTrack for Enterprise Mobility program
providing a comprehensive end-to-end view of mobility market dynamics.
