PBI Media To Host Worldwide ASP Series
Kickoff Event Set For June 19-21 In New York
March 20, 2000 - Network Hosted Applications
PARSIPPANY, NJ, March 20, 2000 - The ASP (application service provider), a high-growth market which enables customers to immediately exploit emerging technologies while reducing costs, is expected to have one of the most profound impacts on the world of Information Technology over the next few years.
The applications-hosting market, which was at $933 million in 1999, is estimated to grow to $20 billion by 2003 and average revenue growth for ASPs this year predicted to near 250 percent. A recent survey indicated that 34 percent of bank and financial institutions and 32 percent of healthcare organizations supported ASPs. The survey also indicated more than one-third of information technology and development managers from large corporations are expected to rent applications from application service providers this year.
To help companies learn more about this market -- and how it can help them, PBI Media, the world's largest research and consulting firm dealing exclusively in the telecommunication industry, is sponsoring a global ASP conference series. The kickoff - supported by Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: SUNW) and the New York New Media Association (NYNMA) -- is the Network Hosted Applications Conference (NHAC) 2000 planned for June 19-21 in New York City at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers.
"The NHAC is the only conference designed for business builders forming partnerships to bring next generation applications to market," said David Laughland, senior executive officer of PBI Media. "Attendees will hear from the major players in the industry about how big the market really is, which applications are the most lucrative and which industries will generate the best prospects. They also will have a chance to meet face-to-face with potential partners and users and hear about successful applications."
Driving the ASP market is major investment from telecom giants including AT&T (NYSE:T), MCI (NASDAQ:WCOM), Sprint (NYSE:FON), Qwest Communication (NYSE:Q), Level 3 Communications (NASDAQ:LVLT) and Global Crossing (NASDAQ:GBLX).
Application Service Providers are service firms that deploy, host, implement, manage and support applications from a central data center across a wide-area network, such as the Internet or leased lines. End-users access these applications remotely and usually pay for them on a per-month basis.
Because a firm no longer has to buy, store and upgrade software, it can slash costs in its technology department and concentrate on core competencies. ASPs have a huge potential as companies seek to outsource applications such as e-mail, e-commerce, web hosting, as well as customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning software.
The current roster of companies supporting the growth of ASPs includes Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL), Novel (NASDAQ:NOVL), IBM, (NYSE: IBM), Siebel Systems (NASDAQ:SEBL), PeopleSoft (Nasdaq:PSFT) ICG Communications (NASDAQ:ICGX) and Winstar Communications (NASDAQ:WCII).
The ASP model -- which involves companies pooling their technology know-how -- will also offset the current IT workforce shortage where more than 1.4 million new workers will be required to meet the nation's projected demand. "
"ASP offer advantages to all sized companies," said Laughland. "As the Internet and specialization makes industry more competitive, company's need to effectively utilize technology. Network hosted applications help companies hurdle technology and capital barriers while focusing on their core business," said Laughland.
