NEW YORK, April 13, 2000 - In-building wireless revenues are expected to soar from $161 million in 1999 to more than $893 million in 2004. Driving the growth of the industry, according to an analyst at PBI Media, is the need for anytime/anywhere mobility, the push for improved employee productivity and competitive pressures for improved customer service. PBI Media of Parsippany, N.J., London and Washington, D.C., is the world's largest research and consulting firm dealing exclusively in the telecom industry.
Speaking at today's Wall Street Technology Association Seminar, Shelly Tyler, an analyst at PBI Media, predicted that converged voice and data technology solutions, will capture 46 percent of in-building wireless handset shipments by 2004, up 42 percent from its current 4 percent market position. "The converged voice and data technology solution piggybacks on wireless LAN access points to deliver mobile voice communications along with data traffic. These products enable mobile employees to make and receive telephone calls over a shared wireless infrastructure," she said.
The licensed technology solution - which allows workers to make and receive calls with their public wireless handset or cell phone and utilize all the features of their office telephone system - is also expected to gain handset market share, jumping from 7 percent in 1999 to 34 percent in 2004.
Unlicensed wireless technology solutions, which operated on either the 900 MHz or the Unlicensed Personal Communication Services (U-PCS) band -- will only represent 20 percent of the marketplace in 2004, which is down 69 percent from their 89 percent position in 1999. " Even though, the market share of the unlicensed technology solution will drop during the next five years, handset shipments will continue to increase for all three technology solutions in the next five years," explained Tyler.
During the hour-long presentation, Tyler explained how in-building wireless products work and described market drivers, product benefits, and the advantages and limitations of each technology solution including providing specific customer case studies.
In-building wireless systems allow workers to utilize portable phones within a building or campus and still receive all the functionality of a corporate PBX and Key/Hybrid phone system. In-building wireless - because workers can move freely throughout their work environment receiving and placing calls -- is especially attractive to the education, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing industries that have highly mobile employees.
