NEW CHALLENGES FOR TELECOM IN INDIA

New Delhi, July, 15, 1999 - PBI Media Tarifica, a telecommunications consulting firm based in London, UK, will be holding its inaugural seminar on telecommunications opportunities in India on August 25 and 26.
PBI Media Tarifica, and PBI Media InfoTech of Parsippany, NJ, USA, are subsidiaries of Phillips International, a market information and publishing firm headquartered in Potomac, MD.
The 2-day seminar, featuring telecom experts from around the globe will be held at the Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi, India. Attendees will evaluate major changes in global telecommunications and its potential impact on India.
India is increasingly viewed as one the world's emerging markets for high-quality telecommunications networks, much like the U.S. market was 25 years ago. "India, perhaps even more than China in the near term, represents significant telecommunications opportunities. There is a large and growing demand for high quality telecommunications networks. India will become in due course a huge demand source of bandwidth", says Philip Low, director, PBI Media.
The seminar will explore key issues concerning the telecommunications segment including privatization, tariffing challenges, interconnection strategies in newly liberalized markets. A special Internet Telephony workshop will also be conducted by Tier 1 US carrier, ITXC.
Expert consultants from PBI Media will provide presentations of their latest research in tariffs, cellular tariffs, wholesale and global fiber build.
Attending the series of seminars will be the "who's who" of the telecom industry in India. The inaugural session will include Mr. Akhileshwar Prasad, member finance and secretary, Telecom Commission India. Other keynotes include Shri Amitabh Kumar, acting chairman and managing director of VSNL, and the regulator, TRAI will be represented by Dr. Rajat Kathuria, director economics. Mr. Alistair Scott, vice-president, Asian telecom analyst, Merill Lynch, Dr. S.D.Saxena, of MTNL, Mr. C Karunakaran, vice president of BPL Mobile Communications Ltd and Mr. Sandeep Sharma, manager - telecom products division, Corning India will also speak.
Ciena, a leading US vendor will be co-hosting with PBI Media, a gala reception and dinner for conference guests and the leading members of the Indian telecommunications community.
