Enterprise Convergence: The Race for IP Telephony Supremacy

With over 20% of U.S. Enterprises expected to implement IP Telephony at more than 5 sites by year's end -- 2003 is projected to be a breakout year for multi-site implementations, according to InfoTech primary research. This first release in InfoTech's 2003 research program on converged communications, marks the fourth annual primary research study published by InfoTech on this rapidly evolving market. Conducted in the 3rd quarter of 2002, 200 U.S. Enterprises were interviewed to assess the progress being made in evolving from an all-TDM Stage 0 profile to a greater than 5 site, Stage 2, implementation. As Enterprises that have reached Stage 2 deployment have virtually locked-in their choice of Preferred Vendor for all future IP Telephony purchases, the report also focuses on "the race" between PBX and data network vendors to achieve market supremacy before the Stage 2 threshold is reached.

Key Questions This Research Will Answer:

  • What is the current market demand for IP Telephony and how has it changed during the last 12 months?
  • Are the adoption curves of initial and multi-site implementations ahead of or behind earlier projections?
  • What factors are driving or constraining the near-term decisions of initial vs. multi-site implementers?
  • How do the Enterprise decision-makers rate the IP Telephony capabilities of their primary PBX vendor vs. their primary data network equipment vendor?
  • How do their voice vs. data vendor ratings compare with respect to product issues, converged applications, sales/marketing, service/support and ease of migration?
  • To what extent have the IP Telephony solutions from data network equipment vendors penetrated the installed base of traditional PBXs?
  • What are the major differences in market outlook between voice decision-makers and data decision-makers and what impact are they likely to have on the market?

IP LAN Telephony: Probing the Shift in Market Demand

Shifts in market demand for IP LAN Telephony are impacting the market for traditional PBXs. U.S. shipments of legacy PBXs and Key/Hybrid phone systems were down sharply in 2001, as more and more customers began to implement systems based on the new IP technology. But the full impact of IP LAN Telephony was much greater, because customer indecision regarding this new technology is causing postponement of purchase decisions for traditional CPE. Conducted in the 3rd quarter of 2001, this study describes how and why the market demand has shifted in several important market segments.
